I think I used to WRONGLY dismiss Maps of Non-Existent Places by Thank You Scientist since it was a first album and those tend to have quite a bit of jank, but after a couple more listens, woweee, it's so freaking good!!!
Maybe I'm super wrong, but I think the choruses give off j-rock vibes (in chord progressions, generally optimism, or just the sorta dancey rhythms??), and so I didn't give it as much credit cuz I've heard that before and not as unique?
But, yeah, on more listens, those choruses (especially in Carnival and Absentee) are so dang refreshing and provide so much catharsis to the awesome classic Thank You Scientist instrumentals and verses. Dunno if this makes any sense, basically I really love this album cuz of the slightly different vibes to the other two albums

Currently obsessed with Caverns by Thank You Scientist (and the rest of their discography tbf). Awesome instrumental opening, and then the first verse douses you in insane drippy vibes like you’re in some kind of… uh cavern. As soon as the verse starts, you’re like, oh I’m somewhere else now, cool. And then the chorus is devastating it’s all just so good, fantastic band. Also the lyrics hit so hard and fit so well

AOTD 12-20-2023 - Stranger Heads Previal (Thank You Scientist)
[All albums are rated subjectively based off my own enjoyment]
7/10
Another 7-8/10. I suppose I'm suffering from what's known as Selection Bias; As I selected albums from which I had already heard a song or two / seemed interesting to me, my ratings are going to be higher by default. Nevertheless-
Lots of interesting things going on here. Thank You Scientist is an 11 piece Prog Rock band, and by God do they use every instrument available by all means. The highlights of this album include Mr. Invisible, a 10/10 track that flawlessly showcases each and every instrument to their fullest potential, A Wolf in Cheap Clothing, a Through-Composed tune that takes full use of it's available dynamic range, and Rube Goldberg Variations, a 9 minute through-composed Epic full of bombastic composition and tight ass solos through multiple different genres.
Unfortunately, this album got off to a rough start. The Sommambulist was just north of Mediocre. It wasn't bad, nor did it have any of my usual turnoffs. It just didn't jive with me as much as the other tracks did. It has it's moments here and there, but they leave right as I was getting turned on to the track.
The mixing was also a low point, as I found myself struggling to pick out instruments from the mix in most of the songs. I don't know what I'd do differently (as I haven't had to work with an 11 piece band before), but it just felt too convoluted or muddy in the mids and mid-highs, similar to how Insomnia by JMPB suffered as well.
Overall I did enjoy my time with this album. While it would have scored a point higher, the mixing reduced my overall enjoyment enough to deduct a point. Regardless, I'd recomend a listen to anyone that finds themselves enjoying Prog, or to the Rockers that want just a bit more Pizazz in their music.
Favorite Songs: Mr. Invisible, A Wolf in Cheap Clothing, Rube Goldberg Variations
Least Favorite Songs: The Sommnambulist, Caverns

the fact that there at least two math-y/prog/post-hardcore/metalcore bands with jazz fusion elements is an unexpected and pleasant surprise
#thank you scientist#shrezzers#music#mathcore#maybe im crazy but i also get a hint of coheed and cambria from thank you scientist#i just really want more horns or saxophone solos to go with my insane time signatures
